South Florida Homes and Home Offices
For those considering purchase of South Florida homes, trends suggest that having a home office is not as popular as it once was. According to findings in recent studies as published in RealtorMag, developers are increasingly moving to create open spaces as fewer home buyers demand home offices. Data from Zillow suggests that the phrase “home office” has diminished from listings by more than 20 percent over the last year. To be sure, such findings are solely reflective of South Florida homes, but rather a reflection of national trends. As Wi-Fi connectivity and portable devices have enabled people to no longer be tethered to desktop computers, home builders have increasingly begun creating workplace nooks or power stations to complement open-concept design features of homes. According to Kansas-based Home Designer Tim Shigley, “The bigger, more ornate home offices that we once did have kind of gone away … People started saying: ‘Do I need a home office? I have other things I want to buy.'”
Interestingly, a 2016 survey conducted by the real estate consulting firm of John Burns found that there are still many older adults who prefer having a home office. In fact, almost half of all surveyed were in favor of it.
Fortunately, whether you’re someone who wants a home office or one who opts for the current open-concept design styles, the choices among South Florida homes accommodate either preference.
