Homebuyers create a budget and then spend more

ATLANTA – March 22, 2017 – A study of 1,200 consumers considering a home purchase this spring found common theme: They’re all stressing over the process.

The study done by Ebiquity and commissioned by owners.com found that 72 percent of potential homebuyers expect stress in the homebuying process, with many citing the financial aspects as most concerning.

Top financial stress points

  • Fear of losing earnest money deposit (64 percent)
  • Becoming “house poor” (61 percent)
  • Bidding wars driving up the price (59 percent)

Stress, however, does not seem to kill the spirit of adventure for potential homebuyers. When questioned about their willingness to go over budget if a dream home came along, 55 percent said they would. And of that 55 percent, they’d pay an average $37,809 more.

The study was completed online among a random sample of the general U.S. population and an oversample of consumers in the Atlanta and Miami region. The overall margin of error is +/- 2.7 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
